SU-100 Assault Gun
This is one of the oldest motorized model kit made by Tamiya in the 1960s. The kit contains an early blue TKK Mabuchi No. 25 motor and a metal gear box. As with all the old motorized kits, the tracks are made of black rubber, which, fortunately, have not decayed or embrittled over the years. This model requires two AA size batteries to operate the forward and backward motion.
The SU 100 assault gun was developed based on the chassis of the T34 series and powered by the same type of engine. It is characterized by the five large road wheels and box shaped superstructure at the front with sloping plates all around. In contrast to the earlier SU 85, the front right corner of the fighting compartment of the SU 100 is surmounted by a cupola for the commander. It equipped with a long gun without muzzle brake, but its special purpose vehicle versions do not mount a gun. The SU85 and the SU 100 have been used since 1944 and 1945 respectively by the USSR tank destroyer battalions and then by the tank destroyer units of the mechanized regiments. They were also used in Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, Hungary and Egypt. The SU 100 is a very low and well shaped vehicle of robust and simple construction. Until the introduction of the T54 medium tank it represented an effective, more powerfully armed complement to the units of T34 tanks. – by Tamiya
